Welcome Back!05 Jan 2018Welcome Back!

We hope that you have had a good rest over the holidays and we wish you all a Happy New Year!

This half term our topic is Traditional Tales. We start the half term with the story of Hansel and Gretel.

This Week

The children have really enjoyed exploring the new role play area which has now a fairy tale theme to complete with a witche's cottage and a castle!

As well as this, there is also a fairy tale theme to the Small World area with a castle, knights, fairies Cinderella, prices and a dragon.

The children have really let their imagination run with narratives about imprisoned princesses, evil stepmothers and brave knights, and all of this on day one alone!

They have also enjoyed investigating all the many other enhancements introduced this term.

Also this week....

The children have a new set of words to learn: first, then and next and the phoneme that they were introduced to this week: j . Please can you ensure the children practise writing and sounding the letters, could you also give them words containing the letters learnt so far to help them practise sounding out the words, and then writing them. The children should now be able to sound and name all the letters in phase 1+.

Please continue to practise with your child all the high frequency words that have been so far. Also, please let us know if you are missing any other phonics sheets and we will replace them for you (the phonics sheets are numbered).

We will also send out a sheet with all the Oxford Reading Tree character names on it. Please support your child in being able to sight read these names first with the picture and then with just the name.

Next week

This week the children will be introduced to the phonemes w, z as in zip and zz as in buzz. We will be using these sounds and those learnt so far to blend the sounds (push sounds together) to read words and segment (break sounds up) in a word to spell. They will also have two new key words to use; her and his.

Topic and Literacy

This week we shall continue with the story of Hansel and Gretel. We will concentrate on the beginning of the story, and how the beginning of a story introduces characters and the setting. We will also look at the use of adjectives (wow words) to describe a story setting or character.

They will also make their own gingerbread cottages using recycled milk cartons and will decorate them with collage items.

During RE, the children will learn about God`s love and think about the different ways God shows his love to us.

During numeracy we will continue to work on addition, first by combining two groups but also looking at the signs + and = to put into a corresponding number sentence. Web will also introduce how to add two single digit numbers by adding on using a hundred square.

Have a great weekend!

See you on Monday

Mrs. Fletcher
